Spring 2011 Beauty Trends: Fuchsia Lips

Bold magenta pouts are the new red lips.
If there's one lippie shade you should own right now, it's fuchsia. And from the looks of it, the bolder, the better. Think of this striking magenta lip color as the more playful cousin of classic red lips -- it commands just as much attention, but is younger and more girly.

Pick one in a bold shade that makes your pout pop -- whether it's rich berry mauve as seen at Sonia Rykiel or hot fuchsia a la Diane von Furstenberg and Tommy Hilfiger.

How to rock fuchsia lips

  • Find a flattering shade for your complexion. Fair skin tones can opt for bright mauve pinks while tanned skin tones should go for deeper fuchsia.
  • Take a cue from Diane von Furstenberg, and balance bold lips by keeping the rest of your makeup low-key. Team with an eyeliner, mascara and neutral blush for a fresh, matte look.
  • To avoid feathering, fill in your lips with a lip liner pencil in a shade close to your natural lips before applying lipstick.
  • Invest in a lip brush. Backstage at Sonia Rykiel, fuchsia lips were painted with a lip brush for that perfect pout. Precision is key when it comes to strong-hued lips -- applying color straight from the tube won't give you that sharp precise finish.
